What Is Cortisol Stress — and Why Does KA-EX® Work?

Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone. It rises in response to physical or emotional stress to help you adapt—but when cortisol stays elevated for too long, it can impair recovery, disrupt sleep, and diminish overall performance.

 

After intense training, the body enters a prolonged stress state: inflammation, increased acidity, and micro-tears in muscle tissue trigger an extended cortisol response that can last 48 to 72 hours. This often results in low energy, stagnated progress, and—in more severe cases—declining muscular performance. 

KA‑EX® is designed to counteract cortisol stress through multiple pathways: 

  • It contains phosphatidylserine, a clinically studied ingredient shown to reduce cortisol levels directly.

Sugar is known to lead to a cortisol spike, why does KA-EX® contain sugar?

It’s true that sugar can cause a short-term cortisol spike lasting 30 to 60 minutes. However, in the context of post-exercise recovery, this effect is largely irrelevant.

 

Intense physical activity elevates cortisol levels for 48 to 72 hours due to muscle damage, inflammation, and systemic stress. In comparison, the brief spike caused by sugar is minimal and does not contribute to any meaningful additional cortisol load.

 

KA‑EX® contains only 18g of sugar—the same amount and type found in a regular apple (12g fructose, 6g glucose)—and is classified as “low in sugar.” Yet this small amount plays a critical role in the product’s effectiveness by enabling key recovery processes: 

  • Replenishment of muscle glycogen: Glycogen is the body’s primary fuel source during exercise. Recovery requires energy, and restoring glycogen immediately post-workout is essential for proper muscle repair and performance rebound. 
  • Facilitated nutrient and electrolyte absorption: Sugar acts as a transport facilitator. As glucose and fructose are taken up into muscle cells, they carry along vital co-transported substances—such as electrolytes, L-glutamine (for cellular repair), anti-inflammatory compounds, and alkaline minerals to restore optimal pH balance. 

Research shows that even when the body is adequately supplied with protein and other nutrients, the absence of sugar post-exercise can reduce recovery efficacy by up to 34%. In fact, after high-intensity training, it is often recommended to consume 60g of carbohydrates to support full recovery.
